It is organized thematically, so it is very practical to see particular words used in a context. My passive knowledge of German is good, but I find this book invaluable in making that bridge to active, spoken German easier. Knowing what a word means is only the first step; seeing how it is used in context makes the filling-out of basic German vocabulary possible. In short, it puts the meat on the bones.
